How to Create a Fabric Finish

A fabric or line technique creates a look of elegant linens or fabric variations of color on a wall or ceiling. The finish can be applied vertically, horizontally, diagonally or in random line patterns.

For Best Results:

BEHR Faux Glaze has an open working time of 15 minutes. Work at a quick and steady pace to avoid the development of hard lines in your project.

Wipe off your dry brush with a cloth rag or paper towel after each pass.

Stand away from the wall and preview your work periodically to ensure an even look.

  1. Step 1

Paint the base color and allow it to dry completely before glazing.

  2. Step 2

To create the Fabric Finish, you will need a handheld whisk broom, dry brush or other implement and a six inch mini roller.

  3. Step 3

To prepare the BEHR Faux Glaze, you will combine four parts glaze to one part BEHR Paint. For example, in an average sized room, you will use one gallon of BEHR PREMIUM PLUS WITH STYLE® Faux Glaze and one quart of PREMUIM PLUS ULTRA® Paint and Primer in One or PREMIUM PLUS® Paint. Stir the paint and glaze mixture thoroughly.

  4. Step 4

Dip a quality 2"-2½" wide nylon/polyester brush into the color glaze mixture from the bucket. With your brush, paint (cut in) around the perimeter of your working surface. Start at a top corner and continue along the ceiling and around the baseboards.

  5. Step 5

Pour the colored glaze mixture into a paint tray and work a 6" mini roller into the glaze until it is fully loaded. To remove excess glaze, roll the tool on the ribbed area of the paint tray.

  6. Step 6

Starting at the top corner of your project area, roll the colored glaze down the length of the surface in a 3' wide vertical section.

  7. Step 7

While the glaze is wet, drag the whisk broom over the vertical section from top to bottom.

  8. Step 8

Before the vertical lines dry in this section, overlap the texture horizontally by dragging the whisk broom from left to right on the wet surface area. Repeat the process all the way down the section, overlapping each drag with the next.

  9. Step 9

Continue working in 3' wide vertical sections. Overlap and blend each section as you go to avoid hard edges.

  10. Step 10

Repeat the process until the project is complete.
